Composer: “Behind his precise formulations lie great emotions”

More Infos:

Budapest-born composer and violinist Márton Szőcs studied violin and composition at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca, and continued his composition studies at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He currently works as an editor at Editio Musica Budapest Zeneműkiadó, and is a member of the CENTRIfuga community of musicians.

A podcaster from the Hungarian House of Music said of Szőcs’s musical approach: “Behind his tactfully precise formulations lie great emotions.” His works, which explore dark dissonance, surprise, and meditative delicacy, have received prizes and scholarships and are regularly performed in Hungary and abroad by leading interpreters of contemporary music. His compositional interests include gesture-based music, controlled chaos, algorithmic processes, and the dialectics of sonority. A strong focus on notation and atmosphere is a recurring feature of his work.

Beyond composing, he is active as a performer, improviser, teacher, and score editor. His broader interests include the humanities, sports, and cooking.
