The New Hungarian Music Forum’s composition competition is a unique opportunity for young and middle-generation composers to present such works to the public that employ large ensembles. The primary objective of the competition is to encourage and support the creation of new pieces, and to foster lasting cooperation between composers and orchestras. Judit Varga, Balázs Horváth, Péter Tornyai, Máté Balogh, Bánk Sáry, Marcell Dargay, Máté Bella, László Sándor, Péter Zombola and Dániel Dinyés were some of the award winners in recent years, and they have all become forces to reckon with in Hungarian contemporary music. Composers who submit seven to fifteen-minute-long compositions for chamber groups and small ensembles enjoy a great degree of freedom with regard to the instrumentation: ten to sixteen players can be employed, and the instruments need not be strictly classical, with bass guitars or cimbaloms being well within the rules. There is, however, one restriction: for an entry to qualify, it must feature a trumpet soloist.
This concert of the CAFe Budapest Contemporary Arts Festival is presented by Müpa Budapest as a joint event with Budapest Music Center.
